A common misconception about doulas is that we are only for women planning an intervention-free birth, but that's just not true.
For example, a doula can help you receive accurate and transparent information about the risks of epidurals before labor, and she can help you to wait as long as possible before getting an epidural.
If you choose to get an epidural, your doula can:
- Remain non-judgmental. This is your body, your baby and your birth.
- Help you to change positions in the ways that remain open to you once you can no longer shift yourself.
- Ensure that you — and not the tubes and machines surrounding you — remain the center of attention.
- Tuck you in and help you get to sleep.
- Remind you to ask questions about interventions that may be recommended to you.
- Support you and your partner emotionally.
You will be able to find one of our doulas to support you if you want an epidural or other intervention during labor — ask your prospective doulas about the sort of support they offer when a woman gets an epidural!
